VAT for ecommerce traders across Europe

Dr. Peter Mowforth

Non-resident businesses that register for VAT in another EU state face a nil registration threshold. Ecommerce businesses are different and face special EU distance selling VAT thresholds. If you wish to register, details about EU VAT are available here. Understanding how these operate can help you optimise your business and help you better engineer your cashflow

An important practical consideration is how ecommerce traders receive their VAT bills. It is not straightforward. Each country has a different mechanism for billing. Each country has it’s equivalent to HMRC and some are much better organised than others. While some will send you a bill as soon as you hit the threshold, don’t expect less well organised countries to be so efficient.
